Customized Restoration
The
Carbon Fund's (TCF) focus on reforestation and preservation
will have a positive impact in reducing greenhouse gasses
(GHG). But TCF's Carbon Sequestration Management Plan (CSMP)
takes this effort another step by assuring that the reforestation
occurs in a biodiverse fashion. By planting a variety of
tree species rather than a monoculture, TCF will be promoting
the restoration of a naturally functioning forest ecosystem
that will have benefits beyond carbon sequestration. Biodiversity
will promote such public benefits as improved water quality,
reduced soil erosion, fish and wildlife habitat and outdoor
recreation. These improved environmental assets will be
quantifiable and may be marketable, thus providing economic
incentives to continue environmental enhancement. Each project
is designed to restore fully functioning ecosystems.
The
project life of the forest established will be either 55,
70 or 99 years. Landowners will enter into an Environmental
Assets Easement with TCF to reflect that period. Once these
forests have been established, the stands will be managed
on a sustained yield basis with removals aimed at high value,
durable products such as hardwood flooring, furniture, cabinets,
etc. The carbon sequestered in these products will extend
the capture period several decades after harvest and thereby
meet any long-term permanence standards.
