Project Monitoring
The
Carbon Fund's (TCF) Carbon Sequestration Management Plan
(CSMP) will establish a carbon baseline and a defined monitoring
system so that greenhouse gas (GHG) removals can and will
be independently verified.
An analytical
firm will perform baseline measurements of the carbon cycle
on each site that comes under this CSMP. This will include
soil carbon analysis and documentation of current vegetative
cover. Permanent random sample plots will be established
to monitor carbon sequestration over time. Long-term predictive
models will be prepared and periodic monitoring will be
made to true up the model.
Carbon
sequestered under this CSMP will be reported to the 1605(b)
program of the 1992 Energy Policy Act, administered by the
Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department
of Energy.
TCF
will gather all information necessary to make the above
filing. This will include but will not be limited to mapping,
baseline quantification, carbon sequestration accumulation
per acre, etc.
This
CSMP will provide demonstrable long-term management by a
qualified entity, such as the Mississippi River Trust, to
ensure the full range of benefits.
Carbon
uptake is based on specific species density tables and soil
carbon analysis. The species density tables are from the
USDA Forest Service. Below ground carbon ranges from 25
to 50 tons per acre and above ground carbon ranges from
400 to 450 tons per acre utilizing a 70-year easement. Our
field verification schedule is as follows:
1)
TCF will conduct soil analysis on a grid pattern based on
the percentage of occurrence of soil types on the property.
These analyses will be performed in years 1, 10 and 20.
2)
For above ground biomass, seedling survivability will be
verified for the first four years.
3)
Beginning in year five, permanent sample plots will be established
for species identification to be performed in years 5, 10,
15 and 20. Also, the Mississippi River Trust, which holds
perpetual and non-perpetual easements on property, will
monitor each project on an annual basis, for the life of
the easement, for forest health and habitat enhancement.
